Position Overview

Under the direction of the Food Services Manager, the Cook supports the preparation, cooking, and service of nutritious meals for our programs. This role plays an important part in creating a welcoming, safe, and respectful dining environment for the people we serve.

Working both independently and as part of a team, the Cook follows established menus, recipes, and food safety standards to deliver high-quality meals while minimizing waste.

Major Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Kitchen Operations

  • Prepare assigned food items following established menus, recipes, and quantity guidelines.

  • Set up workstations with required ingredients and equipment.

  • Measure, portion, and prepare ingredients (e.g., chopping vegetables, cutting meat).

  • Cook food using a variety of methods and equipment.

  • Ensure proper storage, temperature control, food rotation, and inventory management.

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, equipment, and food prep areas throughout each shift.

  • Inspect kitchen and dining areas to ensure safety and cleanliness standards are met.

  • Prepare and restock the kitchen for subsequent shifts.

  • Report equipment issues or supply shortages to the Food Services Manager.

  • Assist with training and orientation of new team members as required.

Meal Service

  • Serve meals that are consistent, properly prepared, and visually appealing.

  • Provide friendly, respectful, and customer-focused service to residents.

  • Portion and serve food according to guidelines.

  • Drive a vehicle to various sites as required.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all FoodSafe, Interior Health Authority (IHA), and workplace health and safety standards.

  • Complete required documentation accurately and on time.

  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

Other duties as assigned.

Job requirements

Education & Experience

  • Certificate or diploma from an accredited institution, preferably in culinary arts, nutrition, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • 1–3 years of experience in food preparation, cooking, and meal service.

  • Experience working with a variety of ingredients, equipment, and cooking techniques.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and FoodSafe standards.

  • Understanding of portion control, inventory management, and food rotation practices.

  • Basic knowledge of nutrition.

  • Ability to follow instructions and prepare meals accurately and efficiently.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, patience, and courtesy.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to build positive working relationships.

  • Ability to multitask and move efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Physical & Employment Requirements

  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, bending, and twisting.

  • Valid FoodSafe certification.

  • Valid driver’s licence or ability to obtain one.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).

  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
