Position Overview
We’re looking for a dependable and community‑minded Custodian to help create clean, safe, and welcoming spaces for staff, visitors, and the people we serve. Working closely with the Director of Facilities Services and the broader Facilities team, this role plays an important part in caring for our buildings, grounds, and shared spaces.
The Custodian takes pride in their work and understands that a well‑maintained environment supports dignity, safety, and wellbeing. This position combines routine cleaning with light maintenance, teamwork, and independent work, all while contributing positively to a mission‑driven organization rooted in respect, care, and community.
Major Responsibilities
Perform general cleaning and janitorial duties in program buildings, offices, washrooms, and common areas
Maintain clean, safe, and presentable interior and exterior spaces, including entrances and grounds
Follow established cleaning schedules, safety standards, and sanitation procedures
Use appropriate personal protective equipment and approved cleaning products at all times
Sanitize high‑traffic and shared areas daily
Respond promptly and safely to spills and cleanliness concerns
Complete minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, basic repairs, painting, and yard upkeep
Monitor custodial supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory and assisting with ordering as needed
Report building issues, damage, or maintenance concerns to the Director of Facilities Services
Build respectful working relationships with coworkers, contractors, and the public
Support operational excellence by following policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements
Perform other related duties within the scope of the role as assigned

Job requirements
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent
Previous experience in a custodial, janitorial, maintenance, or similar role is an asset
A combination of education and experience may be considered
Knowledge and Skills
Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team
Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining clean, orderly spaces
Good time‑management and organizational skills
Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Ability to safely use cleaning equipment, supplies, and basic hand or power tools
Willingness to learn proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals
Physical Requirements
Physically able to lift and move items up to 50 lbs
Comfortable with standing, bending, and performing repetitive tasks
Willing and able to work in environments that may involve challenging behaviours
Conditions of Hire
Valid WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain before starting
Valid First Aid with CPR or willingness to obtain before starting
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening
