The Health Care Worker: Managed Alcohol Program (MAP) is an integral member of JHSOK and serves to deepen the standard of care for clients participating in the MAP at Samuel Place. The Health Care worker will provide direct support to individuals experiencing severe alcohol dependency focusing on harm reduction, health promotion (hygiene, physical health and home health), providing case management and goal setting, and connecting participants to community health supports while providing safe distribution and monitoring of alcohol as part of the program.

The Health Care Worker (MAP) is committed to program delivery focused on Well- Work and Empowered Clients in a health-related context. The Health Care Worker supports clients in managing their health care so that they can live successfully in their residential setting.

The Health Care Worker works closely with the Health Care Manager, Housing Manager, and other people on the client care team to define and deliver plans of action and support.

This person will execute their position in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Core values of the John Howard Society Okanagan & Kootenay.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to JHSOK MAP Standards of Care and Practice Guidelines

  • Monitor health and safety concerns and plan for any improvements

  • Safely distribute alcohol according to program guidelines and case plans

  • Assist clients with hygiene, with a focus on safety

  • Participate and contribute in quality, risk, records, and infection control measures

  • Housekeeping activities relating to maintaining a safe and healthy environment

  • Provide life skills training

  • Arrange transportation and assist clients to attend appointments, including safely transporting alcohol for program clients

  • Support clients in articulating and setting health related goals

  • Document thorough, accurate notes relating to case planning, interventions, alcohol consumption

  • Respond to emergent health and safety patters

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Monday to Friday, 10am - 6pm

  • Full-time, permanent role

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or degree from recognized Health Care Aid / Human Service Work program

  • 1-3 years work experience with vulnerable adults

  • Knowledge of best practices in working with vulnerable populations

  • Knowledge of harm reduction and/or MAP practices

  • Knowledge of substance use disorders gained through education or employment/volunteer environment

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

  • Experience gained through employment, volunteer, or practicum experience at a Managed Alcohol Program or harm reduction environment an asset

  • Class 5 drivers licence, clean drivers abstract, and access to vehicle for work purposes

  • Able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check

  • Valid Basic First Aid certificate

  • Demonstrated experience using computer software such as Microsoft Office and email in a professional setting, along with a strong ability and eagerness to learn new programs and platforms

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
