Job description
The Justice Caseworker - Restorative Justice (RJ), will be providing Restorative Justice processes to community and monitoring the agreements reached by participants in the Restorative Justice Program They will also be connecting persons involved in conflict to services and programs in the community as needed, as well as, maintaining relationships with RCMP, Bylaw Enforcement, ICBC, Corrections, Businesses and the community at large. The goal is to provide service for individuals experiencing crime, conflict, or legal system involvement to create resolutions and plans to avoid recidivism while supporting in life skills and advocacy.
The Justice Caseworker - RJ will perform these duties in alignment with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of the John Howard Society Okanagan & Kootenay, and follow all program guidelines.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Provide Service Coordination and Advocacy for all involved individuals
• Provide Program Delivery in restorative practices
• Support and liaise all individuals involved in conflict to the correct resources and supports
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that comprehensive, coordinated care and support plans are in place
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide individualized support throughout the Restorative process
• Provide program delivery and coordination between those who have caused and those who have been harmed
• Liaise with RCMP, Bylaw Enforcement, ICBC, Corrections, Loss Prevention Representatives and the City of Kelowna Community Safety Unit
• Provide assistance: Obtaining primary identification, securing housing based on client needs, developing reintegration plans, filing income tax, facilitating family connections, and linking clients with community resources, etc
• Provide emotional support: Serve as a compassionate and consistent presence, offering a friendly face and providing emotional support to participants through check-ins, even when no tangible action is required.
• Documentation and Record-Keeping: Ensure thorough, timely, and accurate documentation of client case plans, maintaining detailed records of client interactions, observations, and insights that may impact their well-being during the process.
• Reporting: Provide bi-weekly reports on client progress, successes, and areas for improvement to the Director of Justice, Skills, and Employment.
• Statistical Reporting: Compile and provide relevant statistical data to the Director of Justice, Skills, and Employment and the John Howard Society Okanagan and Kootenay (JHSOK).
• Training Participation: Attend and engage in all JHSOK Training opportunities.
Job requirements
• Post-secondary education in appropriate area of study: social sciences, law, justice, or a related field or equivalent experience in case management within the justice, corrections, or court services sector
• Intermediate computer skills with ability and willingness to learn new software programs
• Training and Certifications in Restorative Justice (Community Justice Forum Facilitation, Victim-Offender Conferencing, and Peace Circle Facilitation)
• Experience working with vulnerable persons with poor housing histories, poverty, substance use, criminal justice involvement, or neurodevelopmental disabilities
• Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management processes
• Proven ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, boundaries and confidentiality
• Strong assessment, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently including self motivate and maintain personal accountability; capable of functioning independently while remaining an integral part of two distinct teams: the JHSOK Team and the Correctional Staff Team.
• Clearance Requirements: Must be able to successfully clear a Provincial Criminal Record Check (CRC), RCMP Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Class 5 driver’s license, clean driver’s abstract, applicable liability insurance, and access to vehicle for work purposes.
